Friday Favorites – June 22

Happy Friday! Hope you’re enjoying your summer. Here are a few of my favorites this week –

My friend Karen Lembo cracked me up first thing Monday morning with this one:

We Do Not Negotiate With Terrorists

Be sure to scroll down and read the comments for our creative, albeit twisted, solutions. (No children were harmed in the making of this post. Well, not too badly, anyway.)

My friend & critique partner Julia Tomiak shared this Jody Heylund post with me:

Why Writers Need to Seriously Consider Pinterest

Since I introduced the dilemma of Pinterest last week, I thought it’d be a good idea to discuss it. Plus, a lot of my Friday Favorites will come from there. Jody does a great job of sharing the benefits, as well as a few warnings.

On Wednesday I hopped over to Angela’s site, The Cadence, and enjoyed her post,

How To Enjoy A Blog

She shares some great tips as well as a how-to video on setting up Google Reader. (If you aren’t using a news aggregator like Reader, you’re wasting a LOT of time.)

Looking for a good beach read? I found one  –

A Familar Shore

by Jennifer Fromke

Suddenly uprooted from her familiar haven, young lawyer Meg Marks must venture into the world of the cloistered Vanderzee clan. Their estranged wealthy father employed Meg to research the family, judge their character, and draw up his will with his inheritance divided accordingly. Meg’s task proves to be more daunting that she expected as she encounters hostility and uncovers hidden family secrets.

Jennifer Fromke’s debut novel is a page-turner and had me hooked from the first chapter. Her characters are well-developed and authentic, particularly Meg. I enjoyed the storyline, and the plot twists kept me guessing and engaged. Can’t wait to see what Jennifer gives us next!

I actually posted this recipe back in November, which was a weird time to be drinking frozen coffee, but weird is how I roll. I actually like this better than Starbucks, and it’s a fraction of the cost:

1 Tbsp powdered creamer
1/2 Tbsp instant coffee
1/2 Tbsp hot chocolate mix
1 Cup water or milk (I use a half cup of each)
1 Cup ice cubes

Blend, transfer into the Virginia Tech cup of your choice, and enjoy!

And while my mind is on coffee, which is pretty much ALL the time, my BFF Sandi Nieto shared her Super Special Cream recipe:

1 can fat-free sweetened condensed milk + 1 can fat-free evaporated milk

And she also linked to Perfect Iced Coffee by Pioneer Woman, which is sure to make you slap your mama. (That’s a sweet Southern idiom we use when something is really really yummy. Don’t y’all go thinking we run around slapping our mothers FOR REAL.)

  3. These are great, Susan!

Yours and Sandi’s coffee creamer recipes reminded me that I have a very easy coffee creamer recipe I use all the time:

    2 cups milk
    1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tablespoon of whatever cake mix flavor you prefer (I use French Vanilla)

Just combine it in the blender and it’s good to go!

I think I’m going to change it up a bit if I ever find a hazelnut flavoring to add to this because my sweet Hubby LOVES hazelnut.

    Friday blessings to you!
    ~Anna
